Easy Rider directed by Dennis Hopper is a road movie where two hippie friends from L.A. sell drugs and take their money and motorcycles and head to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Along the way they meet a few people and end up in some weird locations including jail, all to have their trip to end in a very sad, unexpected way.
The two friends who started the journey Wyatt (played by Peter Fonda) and Billy (played by Dennis Hopper) were not seen very much in the movie, Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper did a great job when it came to acting. Only about half of the movie were they actually acting because the other half was just these two on their bikes traveling across the country. In the scenes that they were acting, they were always doing some type of drug. This movie had an abundance of drug use all throughout the film. The two characters start by smoking “Grass” (marijuana) and later on switch to heavier drugs. Towards the end of the movie you see Billy and Wyatt tripping on LSD.
The music choices in this film were very good. During the slower scenes when the two main characters are just riding their bikes, there was good hip music playing in the background including, “Born to Be Wild’ by Steppenwolf and “It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)” by Bob Dylan. The use of good music made the slower parts of the movie much more bearable and entertaining. The director did a great job on finding good music to showcase for these slow parts they were included in the move to show off the great music.
The clarity of this movie changes throughout. At the beginning of the movie the film was shot one way and the quality was good. When the friends get to New Orleans they switch to a different type of camera technique and the clarity of the film noticeably decreases. The quality lessens but it isn’t bad enough to keep me from watching the film.
This film fits in well with its category. This movie goes right along with the idea of road movies and buddy films. It is a buddy film because the two main characters are good friends and they are solving a problem (trying to get to Mardi Gras) it’s their journey to get to New Orleans and they work together to get there. A road movie is a movie where two or more people go on a journey and run into problems, this film fits in with this category perfectly because the two friends jump on their bikes trying to get to their destination but run into many unwanted obstacles. on the road trying to get to their destination and run into all kids of obstacles along the way.
Easy Rider is a pretty good movie, with many unexpected scenes that keep you interested throughout the movie. This movie would be great for teens and adults in their 20’s and 30’s. I do not believe this movie would appeal to the older crowd because of the excessive use of drugs throughout. If drugs don’t bother you and you want to see a good movie with friends, I recommend going to see this film. The balance of good music and unexpected scenes will keep you interested. This movie is a good one, and worth a watch.
